Hip Pain

There are a number of conditions that can cause hip pain, including bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis. For some, musculoskeletal treatments such as chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy can be helpful But what if it’s not helping? Do we have other options besides surgery to treat chronic hip pain?

Hip Pain

There are many different conditions that can cause hip pain. And hip pain, when it is severe, can be terribly disturbing to our lifestyle because it affects our ability to move around and care for ourselves. Successful treatment of hip pain depends on identifying the cause and matching the ideal treatment approach.

Acute hip pain is managed very differently than chronic hip pain. In cases of acute injury, we first need to understand the mechanism of onset, if any. Further questioning and orthopedic testing can determine if imaging studies need to be ordered. Once the diagnosis is clear, then we know exactly how to manage the injury. If surgery is not needed, it may be a matter of using crutches for a few weeks to rest the injured tissues so they can heal. In these cases, manual therapy can be very helpful for reducing inflammation and pain by supporting lymphatic flow.

Chronic hip pain is often related to repetitive stress from structural misalignment of the pelvis and/or degenerative arthritis. In fact, we find that long-term pelvic and spinal asymmetry is often a trigger or an exacerbating factor in arthritis. When we work to reduce tension and misalignment of the pelvis, hip pain will generally improve or resolve.
